The annual Appy awards are underway again, with public voting now open to decide the best apps on the market.

There are 60 shortlisted apps to be voted upon through 12 categories, making it 20% larger than last year's inaugural awards, which, like this year, were hosted by The Carphone Warehouse.

A number of prominent apps are up for the gongs this time around, including the likes of Skype, Domino's Pizza and ESPN Goals across the range of categories.

App to the future

Those that are clamouring to vote for their favourite titles (or to see the full list of games, tools and ways to waste half an hour at an airport) can head on over to www.appys.com or pop in to a Carphone Warehouse store to cast their nod until 31 March.

The winners will be revealed on 25th April, and we're slightly curious to see how Battersea Power Station will be "transformed into a futuristic world of apps."

Either way, let's hope Angry Birds doesn't squawk away with the title of App of the Year again, especially with TechRadar favourite Grand Theft Auto III in the running.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime UK pre-order opens

Asus has finally opened the UK pre-order for the Tegra 3 toting Eee Pad Transformer Prime tablet, with the slinky slate and keyboard dock combo setting you back £499.

That's the 32GB Wi-Fi only model, which is the only one we'll be getting here in the UK by the looks of things.

You can hand your cash over to Asus now thanks to the magic of pre-ordering, but sadly there's still no official Transformer Prime UK release date so we can't tell you when you'll get it – it's likely to be January at the earliest though.

The good news is that you definitely will be able to enjoy a tasty Ice Cream Sandwichey treat when you finally get the tablet as the Android 4.0 software will "soon" be available via an over the air upgrade.

Soon can't come soon enough

£500 isn't bad for the world's first Tegra 3 tablet – Nvidia's quad-core processor brings super fast performance and full HD video and gaming without chomping too quickly through battery life.

But, as you'll see in our Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime review, we weren't entirely sure that the tablet has what it takes to defeat the iPad 2 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Apple Newsstand opens its doors in the UK

The arrival of iOS 5 in the UK has brought with it a number of decent features for your iOS device, but among the more intruguing is Newsstand.

This feature finally offers up a dedicated place for magazine purchasing on your iPad and there are a number of big-name UK mags and newspapers that are now available through the service.

From Future Publishing – TechRadar's publisher – comes T3 and Total Film, with T3 offering up 360-degree product shots and Total Film arriving with embedded trailers and the like.

Conde Nast has made Vanity Fair, GQ and Wired available on Newsstand, while Hearst Publishing has Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Cosmopolitan and Runner's World.

Magazine downloads

Other publications that are available are the Guardian and Metro newspapers, and small publishing house Imagine has managed to sneak one of its magazines How It Works into the service and Dennis Publishing is offering Men's Fitness.

At the time of writing, T3 magazine is at the top of the Newsstand charts, a position it held when it was sold as a standalone app on the App Store.

Updated: Google Wallet opens for business

Google's Near Field Communications payment solution Google Wallet has officially launched to the public.

The phone-based digital wallet NFC technology has been extensively tested and is now ready for a more mainstream trial.

Google is only making the Google Wallet app available to Nexus S 4G customers on the Sprint network in the US, so it's still a pretty small sample that are able to use the service.

The app stores your credit card details then allows you to pay for goods or cash-in coupons at stores which are geared-up with NFC reader devices, just by flashing your phone at the sensor.

Initially the service will be marketed in the US only for users of the CitiBank Mastercard and through Google Prepaid cards which can be topped-up using any credit card.

However, the Guardian is reporting that the pre-paid cards can be used at internationally at Mastercard PayPass reader-equipped stores in the UK like Boots, Burger King and Tesco.

At the time of writing, it hasn't yet been confirmed exactly what that means for UK Android owners as the app is only currently advertised for the 4G Sprint version of the Nexus S, not the UK device.

As Mastercard's PayPass service is available in the UK, a launch on these shores is possible in the near future, but there's no official information on the Google Wallet website.

UPDATE: And now Visa has jumped into bed with the big G too - meaning it's now both Mastercard and Visa's PayWave system that people in the US can use to pay for things using their phone.

"This agreement extends Google Wallet to Visa account holders worldwide," said Stephanie Tilenius, vice president of Commerce and Payments at Google.

"This is a crucial step towards realizing our shared vision for the future of mobile commerce – one that creates a rich shopping experience for consumers and merchants alike."

NFC 'tap and pay' tech and the Google Wallet service will be coming to more Android phones as the roll-out continues. Maybe the UK will get some love with the next Nexus handset?
