OnLive brings Internet Explorer to iPad

Remote Windows 7 app adds premium serviceApplications News By Chris Smith Thursday at 02:01 UTC | Tell us what you think [ 0 comments ]

OnLive has added a subscription tier to its OnLive Deskop application for the Apple iPad, which now adds Internet Explorer 9 and access to the company's super-fast cloud internet service.

The OnLive Desktop app first launched in January offering remote access to a full version of Windows 7 (including the in-demand Microsoft Office) through the company's servers.

The new $5-a-month OnLive Desktop Plus service now brings Internet Explorer 9 functionality, which allows users to access the flash videos and websites that will not play on Apple's Safari browser.

However, there's more to this than just another Flash-enabled web browser.

Gigabit internet on your iPad

A subscription will give users priority access to OnLive's cloud-enhanced web speeds of up to a gigabit. Early tests have revealed download speeds of 650Mbps and upload speeds of 200Mbps.

It works by channeling your connection through OnLive's mightily impressive servers based in the cloud.

That means, regardless of how fast or slow, your home Wi-Fi connection is, OnLive Desktop Plus' cloud-accelerated connection will dramatically enhance page-loading and streaming speeds.

It'll also offer lightning-fast download speeds when opening webmail attachments from Gmail and Yahoo Mail, and transferring files from Dropbox.

Nothing short of breathtaking

"Experiencing a full Flash-enabled Web experience at gigabit speeds on iPad is nothing short of breathtaking, and OnLive Desktop Plus is your ticket to ride," said Steve Perlman, OnLive Founder and CEO.

"Combine that with OnLive Desktop's full-featured Microsoft Office and Adobe Reader PC applications and not only do you have the world's fastest mobile browser, but the world's most powerful productivity tools literally at your fingertips."

The company says a launch for UK users is coming soon, as well as versions for Windows, Mac and Android in the not-too-distant future.

Firmware Updates Bring Lion Internet Recovery to 2010 Macs

by Andrew Cunningham on 2/8/2012 10:30:00 AM

Apple has released a range of firmware updates that enable the Lion Internet Recovery OS restore feature across most of its 2010-vintage Macs, enabling easy reinstallation of the operating system in the event of a software or hardware failure.

Lion Internet Recovery, a feature which builds on the NetBoot technology in OS X Server, was introduced along with the 2011 MacBook Air and Mac Mini refreshes, and then extended to the rest of Apple's shipping Macs in the following months. Today's updates, which enable support for the 2010 iMac, the late 2010 MacBook Air, and the 15" and 17" 2010 MacBook Pro, follow updates from late January that enabled support for the 13" 2010 MacBook Pro, the 2010 Mac Mini, and the 2010 MacBook. The only model left out is the Mac Pro, none of which (even the currently shipping model) support the feature. Some (but not all) of the firmware updates also fix other minor issues.

The updates can be downloaded using the links provided above, or via Software Update - all updates require a Mac running OS X 10.7.2 or later. The possibility exists that Apple could choose to enable support for even older Macs - models going all the way back to 2007 are capable of running Lion - but until we actually see updates I would say that such a thing is pretty unlikely.

One allows recovery from the internet, one breaks your internet connection.

Thanks Apple. 7sudden Reply requieminadream by requieminadream on Wednesday, February 08, 2012 Actually, 10.7.3 fixed that issue for me.

*shrug* requieminadream Reply RE: Ironic.... by name99 on Wednesday, February 08, 2012 Since I have 4 macs running 10.7.3 and they all connect to WiFi just fine on wake from sleep, I think you might want to be a little more nuanced in your claims.

The Airport SW update that came out just before 10.7.3 did very slightly change the name of the 5GHz WAN created by an Airport Base Station, if you are using separate names for the 2.4 and 5GHz WANs. I'd look there if I were trying to debug the problem --- easiest would be to go into Preferences/Network/Advanced/Wireless, remove your home WAN from the list, then reconnect to your home WAN. name99 Reply RE: Ironic.... by phoenix666 on Wednesday, February 08, 2012 I assume you mean WLAN whitch stands for Wireless Local Area Network. Not to nitpick but WAN stands for Wide Area Network in whitch multipule sites are linked on the same network usaly but not always via wired connection. phoenix666 Reply Off-topic: Wallpaper by rpsgc on Wednesday, February 08, 2012 I *want* that wallpaper!

BlackBerry services back to normal after internet blackout

RIM has announced that online services for its BlackBerry handsets are now back in working order, after a server crash caused millions of users to be without BBM and internet on their phones.

Although it has yet to update its global Twitter account, the UK feed notes: "BlackBerry services have been restored. We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused."

RIM also contacted TechRadar about the situation, explaining: "Yesterday, some BlackBerry subscribers in the EMEA region experienced delays with BlackBerry services.

"The issue was resolved and services are operating normally. We apologise to those customers who were impacted for any inconvenience."

Investigation

RIM has yet to announce what caused the outage, but it did say that an investigation will be made – top priority, however, was getting BBM and the like back to normal.

Reports suggest that a server outage in Slough was the main cause of the blackout but it could also be that servers in Canada also suffered from failure.

RIM has said it may take days to figure out the official cause.

Microsoft adds visual voicemail and internet sharing to Mango

Microsoft has revealed that Windows Phone 7.5 'Mango' handsets will also offer visual voicemail and internet sharing via wireless hotspot functionality.

The new version of the Windows Phone operating system has started its global roll-out today with Microsoft promising it to all current handsets by the end of October.

However with today's launch widely expected, the previously unannounced new features are somewhat of a surprise.

Five device support

Depending on support from networks and hardware manufacturers alike, Windows Phone 7.5 will offer internet sharing for up to five devices.

The functionality is already available to iPhone and most newer Android phone owners, but it seems like this will only be available on new handsets, not those existing devices updating to 7.5.

Also new will be visual voicemail functionality, which will also depend on permissions from your network carrier and the capabilities of your handset.

Adding to that, there's also a new version of the web-based Windows Phone App Marketplace, which will allow users to buy apps from the web and have them automatically download to the phone.

Check out our Windows Phone 7.5 Mango hands-on review.
