Archos announcements are not usually very eventful, but they do have some good options for affordability-minded customers. The company has just announced a new tablet aimed at kids and will be upgrading G9 tablets to Android 4.0′s Ice Cream Sandwich.

Archos had a bit of a delay with its Android 4.0 upgrade for the G9 tablets. The upgrade was supposed to come during the beginning of February. This time, they’re reassuring us that the update is coming within the next couple weeks. If you purchased one of these dual-core Honeycomb devices, you should stay tuned for that OTA update, as it should be coming sooner than later.

On a related note, Archos has just announced another affordable device. The Archos ChildPad is geared for kiddos. It sports a 1 GHz CPU and 1 GB of RAM, but the real incentive is that it is set to launch with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. All this is packed in a 7-inch form-factor.

Not only does it run Android 4.0, but its specs are very surprising for the price. The ChildPad will retail for only $129, which should make it much more enticing to purchase a tablet for the kids. It also comes pre-loaded with fun games and educational apps, as well as parental control features.

Parental Controls are powered by Editions Profil, which is said to be the “most efficient parental control software in worldwide benchmarks.” So you can be sure your kids won’t be accessing naughty apps and websites.

It’s good to see lower-end devices coming with Android’s latest software. Some other manufacturers should take note, as many of us adults are still waiting on updates. Seems our kids just might beat us to it.

Cool! Kids needs more tablets!

Pretty impressed! A 1GHz CPU is more than enough to have a solid android experience! This would be great for kids who get a little rough with their toys. Nice Archos, nice~ XD

Whoa, a $130 ICS tablet! That’s pretty great! This by no means is powerhouse beast but it is 1) Probably GREAT for kids! and 2) some people will be buying it for non-kid use at 130 bucks!

Does anybody know what CPU is in this? Is this a *good* 1GHz chip or one of the crappy Chinese chips in the unbranded tablets that you can buy for cheap on eBay?

Reply 66Dirge 8 hours ago Thumb upThumb down 0

It’s probably a chip they’ve used in the past.

I’ve actually never thought of a recycling plan for parts. But damn, that’s a really good idea.

The ChildPad could prove to be a valuable asset in a child’s education. I approve. :D

Ive never seen this device before in my life – But I do admit the concept is a good one and the pricing is good too, thumbs up Archos.

wow. that’s a pretty sweet price for a kid-friendly tablet. my 4 year old son loves monkey pre-school lunchbox and his monster truck game.. I think the wife would approve of some nice learn to read/learn to write type apps for this.. I may be able to sell her on this one :)

Shit for $130 bills and it comes with ICS I’d buy it.

Archos never updates their products, people with the first Archos tablets are still stuck with Android 2.2; ICS will look goof now, but will also be outdated next year. You will never see Jelly beans on this device. I would not recommend it to friends or family.

I am typing this on a 80 g9, I am totally getting the childpad for my son. I’m hoping that ics will fix the little things that bug me with this tablet.

Archos makes decent hardware at their price point and whether they update them beyond ICS or not this is a good deal for what you get. As many of us will never see ICS on 8-12 month old phones I don’t see a “jelly bean” update as a reason to make a hardware decision.

for 129, its worth a look, I look forward to seeing some reviews on this.

Wish that would have been out at Christmas time. Would have saved me $70 on that Kindle Fire with no Ice Cream Sandwich! Damn!!!!! Lol.
