Official HTC Android 4.0 handset update list

Since Google’s unveiling of Android 4.0 back in October 2011, the main question most of us want answered is: “When will my phone be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich?” We know HTC is working hard to update as many phones as they can, but there are hardware limitations to take into consideration, not to mention the dreaded fact that service providers must specifically “order” an update for each individual phone.

Jump to the bottom of this page to see if your phone is on the official HTC Android 4.0 update list.

Will my HTC phone be updated to Android 4.0?

Since we don’t work for HTC, we can’t give you an exact answer, but we can make educated assumptions based on the announcements HTC has made. HTC’s first wave of Android updates will bring Ice Cream Sandwich to its phones powered by dual-core Qualcomm S3 processors. The overwhelming majoroty of HTC’s phones running on this chip are already on the update list, and we expect the remaining stragglers to be added shortly.

For a while, we also assumed HTC would be delivering the Android 4.0 update to its phones powered by single-core Qualcomm S2 processors. This assumption was partially confirmed when HTC announced that the Incredible S, Desire S and Desire HD would also be receiving  the update. Since most of the other HTC phones powered by S2 chips feature most of the same components, we expect other US-specific devices to be added to the update list, as well.

While we would like to see Android 4.0 running on all HTC’s devices, those who own phones powered by Qualcomm S1 chips should not expect an Android 4.0 release. HTC has not given us any details about these phones yet, but the fact that Google has chosen to let the Nexus One live out its remain days on Gingerbread should be all the evidence we need. The HTC EVO 4G, Desire and DROID Incredible all share the same basic configuration and would most likely not have enough memory or processing power to run Android 4.0 as smoothly as HTC would like them to.

Ok sensation in march…unlocked euro sensation i would imagine. By the time Tmo is done with it..July.

Reply 94schofieldesign 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +5

Sensation 4g says March, come on bigmerf you’ve gotta believe!

Reply 100BiGMERF 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down 0

i will believe it when i see it.. If you ask me , HTC will submit it to Tmo in March. Then Tmo will work there delay game on it.We have to customize our bloat. Also We want you to buy whatever handset we have now that has ICS at 600, instead of getting a Sensation at half the cost.

Reply 98Nick Gray 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +6

Keep the faith. T-Mobile USA launched the HTC Sensation before most of the major players in Europe and their version of the handset received bug fix updates before the Euro versions as well.

HTC has emphasized multiple times that they are working closely with service providers in rolling out the ICS update to their phones, so I doubt they would post the March date unless the were certain the release timeframe.

Gonna have to agree with MERF. In my 6 years with Tmobile one thing has always seemed to stand out. LACK OF FIRMWARE SUPPORT. Vibrant is the perfect example. Still love Tmobile though!

94schofieldesign 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +1

You may be right, but right now I’m just hoping for them to release the necessary drivers in a timely fashion so all these ICS roms I’m running start getting more stable.

Reply 88Jeff Pan 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +1

I thought when they meant HTC Sensation 4G it was TMobile version? Isnt it?

Reply 93jaxidian 02/10/12 1:17 PM Thumb upThumb down +3

You know, I’m glad to see the list of “Definitely going to get it” being longer than the list of “We expect it to get it”. I have grown to expect the opposite. Nice that they’re committing to so many so soon.

Yea, by the time my phone gets upgraded, I am eligible for a new one….

Reply 2coolthecat 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +2

OMG no Evo 4G.???? Not a problem XDA has got me covered

Reply 61honourbound68 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down 0

I’m hoping xda can cover me (and others) on the HTC Evo View.

Reply BrianGuest 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +1

Cyanogenmod just gave an update saying that Evo 4g will not get CM9 any time soon, possibly ever, because they don’t have access to drivers that would allow the camera to work. It’s a shame HTC won’t update for Evo because we know ICS runs just fine. Planned obsolescence.

Reply 91thekaz 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +12

What? No Droid Eris? ;)

Reply 100BiGMERF 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +4

LMFAO !

Reply 60sap 26 13 hours ago Thumb upThumb down +1

Ha, good one! I’m finally retiring mine next week. The Eris really got me into rooting and flashing roms. Thank goodness for CyanogenMod :)

Reply 94AsakuraZero 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +1

and what moto have to say about this? they were blaming the OS instead of their workforce, o well htc its pushing the updates at a good pace go HTC

Reply 4Max.Steel 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +8

YES! The G2 is on there.

Reply 3serivolk 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +1

If this actually happens that would be FTW moment indeed.

Reply PederGuest 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +2

Come on guys….if only negative comments…why bother at all??

Reply 0dopee 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +1

Already rocking ICS on my Desire HD. It’s like I have a whole new phone! I love it. Kudos to HTC for still supporting this great phone, but I think it will be at least the end of 2nd quarter before we can expect the update to roll out.

Reply 88Hall Lo 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +5

Yay for G2!! A fully functional camera in ICS will be great!!!

Reply 95lxgeorge 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down 0

I installed cyanogenmod on my G2 a while ago, but I’m glad to see that it’s no longer obsolete :D

Reply 92Steve Heinrich 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +6

No G1 again?… I don’t think I’m ever getting past 1.6! ;)

Glad for some official updates! Good for all the people with those devices. This will also make it more attractive to future purchasers…. like me :)

Reply WouterGuest 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down -4

TMobile G2 (HTC Hero GSM/CDMA) really? I dont expect that device to receive an update to ICS. The hardware simply cant handle it.

Reply 98Nick Gray 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +3

The T-Mobile G2 is the stock Android version of the HTC Desire Z. I think you’re referring to the T-Mobile G2 Touch.

Reply WouterGuest 19 hours ago Thumb upThumb down +1

My bad. Stupid model names.

Reply Marcofromda510Guest 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down 0

Glad my mytouch made the list of expected devices. hopefully it will get it soon, but ill probably get the HTC Ville whenever it does come out.

Reply 96Nathan D. 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down 0

Lets go HTC, they are mostly the right company to get update going at a reasonable time.

Reply Jozef I Del MundoGuest 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +2

YAY MYTOUCH 4G!!!!!!! =D now the waiting… xD

Reply 97BetterWithRoot 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +1

“HTC handsets expected to receive the Android 4.0 update:

Thunderbolt”

…uh-huh…I expect them to too. However, I am pessimistic. Will it happen…maybe, but only because XDA made it happen.

I just hope they do release an update, so the Devs can rip the radios and other goodies for the rooted folks out there.

Reply Richard CabreraGuest 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down 0

Alright! Inspire 4G I’m. Glad my. Phone is only half worthless now jk I enjoy the phone.

Reply nopeace21Guest 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +1

This is the first time i see the Inspire as possibly (maybe) getting ICS. I hope it’s true!

Reply 8finndogg 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +1

WTH no EVO 4G, oh well I gottz my upgrade right around the corner. Sprint just needs to hurry up and drop that LTE ASAP.

Reply djGuest 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down 0

Soooo. They can Update the T-Bolt and Mytouch 4g but not the Evo 4G

Reply djGuest 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down 0

Yet they are all the same phone essential based off the Desire HD

Reply BartGuest 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down 0

The evo 4g has a snapdragon s1 soc, same as my desire. Both phones are nearly 2 years old. Did you really expect an update for a nearly 2 year old device?:P

Reply 98Nick Gray 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down +2

The EVO 4G is actually based of of the HTC HD2 which was released nearly 30 months ago. The hardware the phone is running on is older that the original Motorola DROID and even the Nexus One.

The EVO 4G has already received two major updates (Froyo and Gingerbread) and countless bug fixes since the device first launched 20 months ago.

Reply 4evobb10 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down 0

Where is the ALPHA 4G phone. You know that phone. HTC what’s wrong with this phone EVO 4G !!!!!

Reply 92jamal adam 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down 0

Hopefully, those expected to receive the ICS update will be part of the official group.

Reply 11K2theIzzo 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down 0

What’s more likely to happen first: Evo 3D getting updated to Ice Cream or the Galaxy Nexus getting released for Sprint?

Reply 98Nick Gray 1 day ago Thumb upThumb down 0

Good question. My bet is that the EVO 3D will get the update by mid-April. Since we have not heard anything from Sprint about the release of the G Nexus in a while, I’d say the ICS update for the EVO 3D will beat it by at least 2 weeks.

Your move Sprint.

Reply 11K2theIzzo 16 hours ago Thumb upThumb down 0

Just in time for Google to release Jelly Bean. SMH.
