iPad tablet market share down to 57 per cent

Kindle and iPad set to dominate tablet market throughout 2012

Apple's share of the tablet market slumped from 64 per cent to 57 per cent in the last three months of 2011, according to figures released on Thursday.

Research firm iSuppli attributes the fall to the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet, which it says sold 3.9 million devices in the six weeks leading up to Christmas following its November launch.

The popularity of the $200 Android tablet saw Amazon gain an impressive 14 per cent of the entire tablet market at this very early stage of its lifespan.

The Kindle Fire easily eclipsed the next placed Samsung Galaxy Tab (8 per cent) and the Barnes and Noble Nook (7 per cent).

Not necessarily bad news for Apple

Despite the rise of the Kindle Fire, it appears that it's a case of more people adopting lower-priced tablets rather than less people buying iPads.

Apple posted record sales figures of 15.4m during Q4 of 2011, so while the Kindle Fire is cutting into its overall share of the market, those ever-rising sales figures are all that will concern Tim Cook for the time being.

Should Amazon launch a larger 10-inch tablet, with a more premium price-point and feature set, then we may get a legitimate competition between Amazon and Apple.

Until that point, both companies seem to be doing just fine within their own markets.

5. I think reviews these days tend to rank features and specifications more highly. There's no point comparing ASUS and Samsung on ecosystem as they're the same. The problem is, of course, the Android ecosystem for tablet is ten times as malnourished compared to the iPad than Android phone is compared to iPhone.

While Android phones are catching up with iPhones, Android tablets are still languishing. They can be as slick as you like, if there's no LoveFilm or the iPlayer app doesn't let you download, it's a less attractive prospect.

The Transformer can get all the plaudits it wants, you still don't get GarageBand or iMovie (or whatever, I don't know the specific apps, I just know they exist or iPad and struggle to be equalled on Android). Sad but true.

4. This really does show how quality and reviews come second to brand to and advertising. Asus only shipped 2k units throughout the whole of 2011 with 4k Kindles and 40k iPads. However, the transformer beats all of the higher sellers in almost every aspect (apart from price on the Kindle).

These results do not take into account the usage each device gets, it is well known many iPad users only use their devices on average once a week with Android users now using their for document editing (not the very poor Google Docs) through to general use. The Kindle Fire's are as good for book reading as an iPad or 'normal' Android device, i.e. poor due to their lack of matt screen and need for powered screens (unlike the normal Kindles).

Samsung are the only contender to Asus, but again their reviews and abilities are less.

Maybe it is up to ASUS to advertise to the public and not us techies to show what their devices really can do.
